Critical Infrastructure

Disruption in critical facilities impacts a large number of people and can result in heavy loss to lives and economy. Infrastructures such as airports, mass transit systems, power plants, telecommunication exchanges, water supply facilities etc. are critical elements for a city’s operation and require 24/7 monitoring.

Increasing safety and security is essential but also needs to be convenient. NEC’s solutions enable frictionless access, providing a high level of security and increased convenience when large groups of people need to move into a secure environment.

NEC’s face recognition technology has been proven in numerous deployments worldwide including airports, border control points and public spaces and is just one of our biometrics solutions being deployed within Critical Infrastructure plans.

Who we work with

From concert halls to sports stadiums, nothing ruins an outing like a public safety incident. Now stadium operators can identify troublemakers or suspected terrorists from live video feeds. NEC’s biometrics solutions help security officials to be more efficient and effective in the way they identify known individuals who may pose a threat to public safety and can alert security personnel to help keep them out.

By deploying our high-tech identification matching technologies at designated points of access both proactive and preventive measures become possible to better secure and manage those Critical Infrastructure areas.

NEC’s solutions enable frictionless access, providing a high level of security and increased convenience when large groups of people need to move into a secure environment. That’s why we work across a number of industries including:

Aviation
Aviation Security
Airlines
Airports
Transportation Hubs
Bus Stations/Terminals
Ferry Terminals
Train Stations
Airports
Meeting Places
Arenas
Sports Stadiums
Convention Centres
Theme Parks

Case Studies

There are two key use cases NEC are addressing in critical infrastructure—one is real-time screening, in which we have the ability to preload an image into a database, allowing us to immediately search those images against live video that is coming into the system. This is typically deployed at key infrastructure choke points, such as a security portal that people are walking through. At these choke points, NEC can extract faces in real time and search those against known faces on the watch lists.

The second use case is high throughput, frictionless access such as verifying contractors and staff entering a stadium or identifying season pass holders entering a theme park. We are able to very quickly and very accurately verify or identify large groups of people.

Innovation

At the recent ConnectID show we announced the NeoFace Express solution which is designed specifically for challenging environments such as airports, to be used at key points of friction in the traveller’s journey, from curbside to the gate. By using facial recognition throughout the travel experience from bag drop to boarding your flight, we are removing friction while increasing safety, security and convenience.

Case Studies

At arenas, sports stadiums, train stations etc., NEC’s advanced facial recognition works with video security to check individuals against known watch lists and generates real-time alerts when positive matches are found. Face recognition captures and extracts faces of individuals from video feeds, performs quality matches in real-time with unsurpassed accuracy and speed—handling up to 3.02 million searches per second.

Olympic Games

NEC will provide a Facial Recognition system for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The system will be used to identify over 300,000 people at the games, including athletes, volunteers, media, and other staff.

Singapore Border Control

With over 200,000 travellers a day arriving in Singapore by air, sea and road, NEC helped Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority implement an automated immigration clearance system.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Began using NEC’s face recognition solutions in order to make the city safer and enhance the quality of life of its citizens by centralizing, integrating and consolidating its safety operations.

Universal Studios Japan

Located in Osaka, Universal Studios is one of the most popular theme parks in Japan with more than 8 million visitors a year. NEC’s face recognition solution NeoFace has helped the park to dramatically shorten guest wait time and due to the use of this recognition technology has succeeded in cutting operating costs by 30%.

Surat, India

Surat is the fourth fastest growing city in the world. In 2011, the government decided to adopt safer city technologies to boost the efficiency of city operations and better serve its 5.5 million citizens. NEC provide security and face recognition solutions to analyse real time and match faces in real-time against a watchlist of individuals to trigger an alert to security staff.

Toshima City

The Japanese city uses strategically placed cameras to collect and visualize accurate real-time video feeds and NEC’s ground-breaking crowd behavior analysis technology to detect commuter congestion and help formulate swift countermeasures preventing crushes and anti-social behaviour.

Our biometrics solutions for Critical Infrastructure

NEC provides a wide range of biometrics solutions to organisations throughout the world. NEC New Zealand delivers innovative, world-leading technologies across a huge range of sectors, helping to improve Critical Infrastructure and improve efficiencies. Here are some of the solutions that are used as part of a Critical Infrastructure programme:

Air travel and aviation security – getting ready to travel
Once a booking is made a traveller starts their journey and uses face recognition on their smartphone to register their face, passport and flight details.
Check-in
Once the traveller arrives at the airport they use face recognition on a self-service kiosk to verify their travel information and passport details against government databases and airline booking systems. Once verified, the traveller may be issued with the airline’s e-boarding pass on their smartphone.
Bag drop
When the traveller is ready to drop off their bags, another self-service kiosk scans their face to confirm their identity and the information is tagged to their bags, which can then be dropped off at a self-service bag drop kiosk or accepted by an airline representative.
Border control and security
At immigration/border control, travellers do not need to scan their travel documents as Facial Recognition is used to check and verify the traveller’s identity against Government databases and ensure compliance with destination and transit requirements. Travellers can be prompted for further checks, if necessary.
Self-boarding
When the passenger gets to the gate they may use the airline’s e-boarding pass on their smartphone or could scan their face at a self-service automated boarding gate and get a greenlight to board the plane.
Bag collection and recovery
Upon arrival at their destination if the passengers find their bag is missing then the passenger can use their face recognition to report a missing bag via a self-service kiosk rather than have to wait in line at a baggage claim service counter.
Railways/Arenas
NEC’s ground-breaking crowd behaviour analysis technology to detect commuter congestion and help formulate swift countermeasures preventing crushes and anti-social behaviour.
Infrastructures such as power plants, telecommunication exchanges, water supply facilities etc.
These facilities require 24/7 monitoring. NEC’s security systems enable the early detection of suspicious behaviour or individuals in restricted areas. Preventing illegal entry is the best approach to averting serious damage or injury.

Seamless Travel with Digital ID

What if you didn’t have to carry cash, credit cards or a passport when you travel? What if checking in for a flight or checking out at your favorite store was as simple as taking a selfie? What if there was one technology that could make your hotel, banking and entertainment experiences safe and simple?

It sounds too good to be true, yet that’s what NEC’s Digital ID promises to deliver in the future.
