NEC New Zealand Ltd. is focused on developing Solutions for Society that utilize the strengths of our state-of- the-art Artificial Intelligence, Biometrics’, and ICT to create social value, including safety, security, efficiency and equality, which are necessary for people to live more prosperous lives. In working towards the realization of such a society, we recognize that the protection of personal information is our social responsibility and have established a privacy framework for the protection of personal information. Efforts are constantly being made to maintain, reinforce, and enhance the framework. Moreover, protection of personal information is integrated into our solutions and services from the design phase throughout their lifecycles.

This privacy statement sets forth our principles as follows:

  1. We abide by the laws and regulations of New Zealand pertaining to the protection of personal information.
  2. We make efforts to implement, through the adoption of necessary and appropriate security measures, the security control of personal information handled by us, as realized through our stringent Information Security policies and procedures that aim to protect the integrity and confidentiality of information and data assets that we manage.
  3. We appropriately respond to complaints and requests for consultation with respect to our handling of personal information, in accordance with applicable local laws and regulations as well as our information security management system.
  4. We make efforts to continuously review and improve the current policies for the protection of personal information and our information security management system.

Commitment to Tikanga and Māori Data Sovereignty

NEC New Zealand recognises its social and legal responsibilities to protect the privacy and cultural significance of personal data. We are committed to upholding:

  • Ngā Tikanga Paihere – ensuring the safe, responsible, and culturally appropriate use of data, and
  • Te Mana Raraunga – enabling Māori data sovereignty and the right to self-determination over Māori data.

We acknowledge that identity and biometric data carry deep cultural meaning for Māori. These types of data must be governed transparently and respectfully, in alignment with tikanga Māori. Our approach has been shaped by local regulations, organisational policies, and the broader cultural context of Aotearoa New Zealand.

NEC has partnered with government agencies across Aotearoa, Australia, and other regions to support strong data governance frameworks. We are committed to working with customers, Iwi, and Māori stakeholders to ensure the Identity Verification Service operates in a manner that is inclusive, respectful, and responsive to Māori perspectives and aspirations.
